What is overtime?

How to calculate overtime?

Assume your overtime rate is 1.5 times your regular hourly rate, following is the overtime formula on how to calculate overtime pay.

Overtime Rate = 1.5 x Regular Rate

If your regular hourly rate is $30 per hour, 1.5 times $30 would make your overtime rate to be $45 per hour.

Let's say your normal work hours per week is 40 hours, and you work an extra 20 hours or overtime, following is how much money you should get paid for that week.

Regular Pay Per Week = $30 x 40 = $1,200

Overtime Pay Per week = $45 x 20 = $900

Total Pay = Regular Pay + Overtime Pay = $1,200 + $900 = $2,100

In this case, your overtime pay of $900 is almost 43% of your total pay.

What is time and a half pay?

Overtime pays police differ from company to company. However, time and a half pay or 50% above your regular rate is the common rate that many companies adopt. For example, if your hourly rate is $20 per hour, the time and half pay mean your overtime pay is $30 per hour for any extra work that you work over 40 hours.

How to calculate time and a half?

The time and half formula is given below that shows you how to calculate time and a half pay.

Overtime Rate = 1.5 x Hourly Rate

Regular Pay = 40 x Hourly Rate

Overtime Pay = Overtime Rate x N, where N is the number of extra hours that you work.

Total Pay = Regular Pay + Overtime Pay

For example, if your hourly rate is $20 per hour, the following is how you would calculate the time and a half pay if you work 10 extra hours.

Overtime Rate = 1.5 x $20 = $30

Regular Pay = 40 x $20 = $800

Overtime Pay = 10 x $30 = $300

Total Pay = $800 + $300 = $1,100
